What is term life insurance?

A term plan is the simplest form of life insurance. You pay a premium for a chosen period — say, until age 60 or 70 — and if you die during that period, the insurer pays the sum assured to your nominee. If you survive the term, a regular term plan pays nothing, which is exactly why it is affordable.

For most earning Indians with dependants, this is the policy that does the heavy lifting. A savings or market-linked policy bought with the same premium would offer only a fraction of the cover.

How a term plan works in India

Term plans are regulated by IRDAI. A few points worth knowing before you buy:

  • Free-look period: you get 30 days from receiving the policy to review it and return it if it does not suit you.
  • Grace period: usually 30 days for yearly, half-yearly and quarterly premiums, and 15 days for monthly mode.
  • Premium lock-in: in a level term plan, the premium fixed at purchase usually stays the same for the full term, so buying younger keeps it lower for decades.

Plain cover or add-ons?

Option What it adds Trade-off
Plain term Death benefit only Nothing back on survival
Return of premium Base premiums refunded on survival, as per policy terms Noticeably higher premium
Critical illness rider Lump sum on diagnosis of listed illnesses Only defined conditions are covered
Waiver of premium rider Future premiums waived on disability or illness, as defined Small extra cost
Accidental death rider Extra payout on accidental death Applies to accidents only

Who should consider a term plan

Anyone whose income supports someone else: a spouse, children, ageing parents, or a lender expecting EMIs. If you have a home loan, the cover should at least clear the outstanding balance, on top of what your family needs to live on.

People with no dependants and no loans may need little life cover right now, though buying earlier locks in a lower premium if responsibilities arrive later.
