What is an ELSS fund?
An Equity Linked Savings Scheme is an equity mutual fund that also qualifies for a tax deduction. It invests at least 80% in shares, much like a diversified equity fund, but every purchase is locked in for three years. In return, investments of up to ₹1.5 lakh a year can be deducted from taxable income under Section 80C of the earlier Income-tax Act, if you file under the old regime.
The Income-tax Act, 2025 took effect on 1 April 2026 with new section numbers, so check how the current rules describe this deduction before you plan.
How the tax benefit works
Say you are in the 30% slab under the old regime and invest ₹1.5 lakh in ELSS (illustrative). Your taxable income falls by ₹1.5 lakh, which saves roughly ₹45,000 plus cess. The saving only counts if that room is not already used up by EPF, PPF, insurance premiums or home-loan principal.
When you redeem after the lock-in, gains are long-term capital gains and taxed under the equity rules applicable at the time. Remember to declare your ELSS investment to your employer during the proof window, or claim it when you file your return.
ELSS compared with other 80C options
| Option | Lock-in | Return type |
|---|---|---|
| ELSS | 3 years | Market-linked |
| Tax-saving bank FD | 5 years | Fixed, interest taxable |
| NSC | 5 years | Fixed, notified rate |
| PPF | 15 years | Notified rate, tax-free |
| ULIP | 5 years | Market-linked, with insurance |
The short lock-in and equity exposure are the attraction. The trade-off is that values swing with the market, and there is no fixed return.
Before you invest
- Confirm your regime. Many salaried taxpayers now use the new regime, where ELSS gives no deduction.
- Start early in the year. A monthly SIP from April avoids the March rush and spreads your buying price.
- Plan for the lock-in. Use money you will not need for at least three years, and keep your emergency fund separate.
- Stay invested longer if your goal allows. Three years is the minimum, not a target; equity usually needs longer.
Our team helps you compare ELSS schemes from different fund houses, completes the paperwork and keeps track of the date each instalment's lock-in ends, so you always know which units are free to redeem.
