Why this matters

Interest rate decisions and lending rules flow through to home loan EMIs, fixed deposit rates and how easily you can borrow.

If you have a floating-rate loan, a rate change usually affects your tenure first. Checking your loan statement after major announcements helps you stay in control.

Who this could affect

Home loan borrowers

Rate changes usually reach floating-rate loans at the next reset, often by changing your tenure first.

FD and savings holders

Deposit rates tend to follow policy rates, but with a lag. Locking in longer tenures matters when rates are expected to fall.

Business borrowers

Working-capital and term-loan rates, and how easily banks lend, can shift with RBI policy.

Key terms in this story

Repo rate
The rate at which the RBI lends short-term money to banks. Loan and deposit rates usually follow it.
EMI
Equated Monthly Instalment: the fixed monthly payment that repays a loan’s interest and principal.
Credit score
A three-digit score (usually 300–900) summarising your repayment history. Higher scores get easier approvals and better rates.

What to watch next

  • The next RBI Monetary Policy Committee meeting
  • Banks’ revisions to repo-linked (EBLR) and MCLR lending rates
  • Fixed deposit rate changes by banks and NBFCs
  • Any RBI rules on lending, prepayment or recovery practices

Questions to ask yourself

  • Is my loan linked to the repo rate (EBLR) or to MCLR, and when does it reset?
  • If my rate rises, would I rather pay a higher EMI or extend the tenure?
  • Could prepaying part of my loan save more than what I earn on my savings?

Common questions about banking & loans

For loans linked to an external benchmark like the repo rate, RBI rules require the rate to be reset at least once every three months. MCLR-linked loans usually reset every six or twelve months.

Bank deposits are insured by DICGC up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, including interest. Corporate FDs are not covered by this insurance, so their credit rating matters.

RBI does not allow banks to charge foreclosure or prepayment penalties on floating-rate loans taken by individuals for non-business purposes. Fixed-rate loans may carry charges, so check your agreement.
